YOUNG sports stars have begun training for the new season with fresh vigour after a summer tour pitted them against the best players from the Southern Hemisphere.

Barnard Castle School girls and boys travelled to South Africa for a two and a half week sports tour which exposed them to a new pace of hockey and rugby.

Boys played four games against the country’s top school rugby sides winning two and losing two.

Girls did slightly better at hockey winning three of their five matches against very strong sides.

The 40 strong party also made many new friends and enjoyed the culture and sights of South Africa including Pretoria, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

Experiences included standing at Cape Point, the southern most tip of Africa, surfing, ascending Table Mountain and taking part in what is reputed to be the highest bungee jump in the world.

Students spent months raising thousands of pounds to pay for the tour and securing sponsorship for the kit.

North East solicitors BHP Law funded the sports shirts.

John Pratt, managing partner at BHP Law, said: “International tours like this provide an amazing opportunity for young people to hone their sporting skills and expand their horizons.

“Our firm has special interest in sport, sponsoring a number of regional events and clubs, and having our own management and representation division, BHP Sport, which supports the next generation of elite sportsmen and women. We were only too pleased to support the Barnard Castle School trip.”

Head of school and rugby forward Nicholas Crowe said: “The South African players were massive. Even the smallest was bigger than I am and they played a very fast and flowing game.

“We were really pleased to perform as well as we did and win two matches, which just showed that the game is about more than just physical size, it is also about developing skills.”

Hockey centre forward Jess Scott added: “We had some very tough matches as they play a very quick game. But the whole experience will benefit the team as we have really bonded and improved our game.”

Director of rugby Martin Pepper said: “Our players performed well in South Africa which is a country which takes its sport every seriously and is very competitive.

“It was a great learning curve and 24 of the rugby squad are coming back to our sixth form which is great for development and bodes well for the season as they are now used to playing at a greater intensity. They have huge potential and hopefully will do well.”
