2nd Sep 2009
Two experienced solicitors have been made Partners in one of the region?s biggest law firms.
David Birks, a business and company law specialist, and Andrea Hewitson, who works in family law, have been appointed Partners at BHP Law.
A former North Yorkshire police officer, David forged himself a new career after he was seriously injured while on duty.
Despite suffering a fractured spine and numerous broken bones in his legs, he recovered to complete the Great North Run.
He also went to night school to get his A levels and then studied for a law degree part-time for five years at Teesside University.
David worked for two major regional law firms before joining BHP Law in 2006.
He is an experienced litigator specialising in company insolvency and director disqualification and is based at the firm’s Teesside office in Stockton.
He said: “After my police career ended I was determined to work hard and have the career I wanted. It’s been a long road, but making Partner at BHP Law is the culmination and shows how far you can go if you are determined enough.”
A keen walker, mountain biker and diver, David played rugby for the police and now coaches in the junior section at Wensleydale RUFC in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
Andrea Hewitson studied law at Newcastle Polytechnic and Chester Law School before joining Newcastle firm Harvey and Marron in 1986.
In 2006, Harvey and Marron merged with BHP Law and Andrea took her expertise in family law to the firm’s office on Newcastle Quayside.
She is on the Law Society panel for family and is a specialist resolution lawyer.
Andrea said: “I am very pleased to have been invited to become a Partner in BHP Law for the recognition that it brings and to have input through Partners’ meetings.”
