BHP Law Awards First County Durham Community Foundation Grant
8th Aug 2011
A GROUP of Darlington scouts are off to summer camp after becoming the first community organisation to benefit from a new fund set up by a regional law firm.
BHP Law is supporting small, local community and voluntary groups in and around Darlington, especially those based around sport and leisure where teams as opposed to individuals can benefit.
It has teamed up with County Durham Community Foundation, which will administer and allocate grants from a grassroots endowment fund donated by the legal firm.
The 5th Darlington Scouts have received the first grant, which will go towards their annual summer camp at Thornthwaite Activity Centre, near Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire.
Twenty-two young people will join the camp to take part in adventure activities including archery, climbing and go-karting.
Treasurer for 5th Darlington Scouts Lawrence Burgess said: “This funding from BHP Law will enable us to subsidise the cost of sending many of our young scouts to camp which will help to increase their independence, develop their social skills and boost their self-esteem.”
BHP Law, which has an office in Faverdale, Darlington, as well as in Stockton, Durham, Newcastle and Halifax, is renowned for supporting local sport, from horse racing to rugby and football.
It also helps the careers of young professionals through its representation and management division, BHP Sport.
The firm also has a long standing relationship with County Durham Community Foundation.
John Pratt, managing partner at BHP Law, said: “The financial squeeze we are all experiencing at the moment means that community groups and charities are finding it harder than ever to raise money.
“We are delighted to have established this fund through the County Durham Community Foundation to help those very worthy projects which boost grassroots sport and encourage participation, especially among young people.”
County Durham Community Foundation is an independent grant-making charity and promotes lasting charitable giving by bringing together donors with their chosen causes.
Since 1995 it has made grants worth more than £18m to groups and individuals across County Durham and Darlington.
