Your Views on proposed plans to Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission

The Government is inviting views on plans to transfer the functions of Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission (CMEC) which, was previously the Child Support Agency into the Department for Work and Pensions.

There had been much debate about the Child Support Agency and this closes to new users from 2012. CMEC was the organisation that was taking on responsibility for this. Now, it appears that consultation is in place for the work to go to the Department for Work and Pensions under direct Ministerial Control in order to improve the accountability and assist in the process of reform.

Also, the Government believes that the abolition of CMEC will help with its drive to reduce the number of public bodies across Government. The Government said that its wide Child Maintenance Reforms are designed to ensure more separated parents have effective financial support. Parents will be helped to make their own agreements and research seems to indicate that half of the parents who are currently using the statutory system would prefer to do.
