Local Hospice supported by BHP Wills Scheme

GENEROUS clients have raised hundreds of pounds for charity by getting their affairs in order.

North East solicitors BHP Law have again backed a wills scheme which raises much needed funds for local hospices.

For the fifth year the practice agreed to draw up wills free of charge with clients agreeing to make a donation to St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington, and Willowburn, Lanchester.

Hospice officials say, as well as raising funds, the scheme also brings immeasurable peace of mind to people who do not believe they can afford to have a will.

St Teresa’s Hospice consultant Steve Rose said: “Many of the people we dealt with were so incredibly grateful because making a will resolved the sort of issues that prey on their mind.”
Hospice director Jane Bradshaw added: “We are absolutely delighted with the generosity of the solicitors. BHP Law are always the first to respond and have been long-term supporters of the hospice.

“We have had more wills donated this year than ever before and apart from the welcome funds this raises, the initiative is so worthwhile for the relief it brings to people as they set their affairs in order.”

Helen Biglin, a Partner at BHP Law and head of the wills, trusts and probate team, said: “The charitable aspect of this scheme often provides the impetus we all need to tackle a subject many people would rather put off.

“Sorting out people’s affairs after they have died can be fraught with difficulties if a will isn’t in place, yet this is something they often neglect to do.

“The fact that, under this scheme clients, are also able to help very worthwhile causes is an excellent bonus.”

St Teresa’s Hospice offers round the clock care for people with life-threatening illnesses and their carers and family.

It costs £2m a year to run, a third of which is provided by the NHS. This year officials have set a target of £500,000 for fundraising.

The hospice has six in-patient beds for overnight respite care, day services for 20 people and 8,000 hours a year of hospice at home care.

It also specialises in bereavement counselling and family support.
