What Are Family Mediation Services?

Couples are increasingly using family mediation services to help settle disputes post separation. One reason for this is that litigation as a means of settling divorce and separations can be extremely expensive and can generate feelings of anger and stress.

Family mediation is a process of negotiation in which a family mediator helps couples to reach decisions about arrangements for the future which they are finding difficult to tackle together. It helps to resolve feelings of anger and stress.

The family mediation process addresses communication difficulties and helps the family focus on finding a solution that meets the needs of the participants, especially children.

How Long Does Family Mediation Take?

Usually one or two family mediation sessions are needed for child-only issues and four to six sessions if there are child and money -issues.

Family mediation is not a substitute for legal advice, nor is it a counselling service. Participants still need to seek advice from their family law solicitor to ensure that the arrangements reached are legally binding.

Other Family Mediation Services

Family mediation can also help with extended family issues, such as when grandparents want to see their grandchildren or other family members need help with regard to having contact with children. Once a family have successfully made arrangements with the help of a family mediator, they are often able to make further arrangements without assistance and without the worry of returning to court.
