A social enterprise in Durham has invested in its first acquisition to provide businesses across the county with a range of office services and facilities.
Durham Business Group has taken the step to expand as it seeks fresh ways to generate revenue to fund its activities and provide more support to members of Durham Business Club and other local businesses.
The group was supported by regional firm BHP Law in acquiring the assets and the leased premises of Office Matters, at Portland House, on Belmont Business Park.
The new business – known as Durham Office Services – provides call answering, message and mail management, administration projects, event management support and marketing assistance to, in particular, small businesses which may not have office back-up.
Businesses from around the region, along with Durham Business Club members, can also make use of private drop-in offices, a small meeting room and a board room that seats up to 20 people.
Christine Yule, managing director of Durham Business Group, said: “The majority of our members are small businesses and many work from home. They have issues about using their home address for business purposes, or there being no-one to answer the phone when they’re out or to cover holidays.
“We can do all that for them, and any other small business in the region, providing a professional business address, call answering service and other support. The office and meeting space is a much more cost effective option than using hotels, which many members are forced to do when they’re out on the road
“The services we provide are available to any businesses and because we’re not-for-profit we can offer all this at very competitive rates.”
David Lucas, a company law specialist and a partner at BHP Law, said: “The acquisition represents an expansion of Durham Business Group’s services for club members and we were pleased to support it through its first and important acquisition.
“The business the group acquired was located in Portland Group premises at Belmont and we were able to retain the ground floor space it occupied, which means the group now has some fantastic additional facilities to offer to its members at a prestigious location.”
Two members of staff have transferred to Durham Office Services.
Whilst the group maintain its training base at MILE House in Chester-le-Street, the Belmont offices will become the group headquarters and the base of Durham Business Club.
