Stephen joined the firm in May 2007. He has eighteen years experience in industry and private practice as a commercial lawyer.

Stephen began his legal career in-house at Jaguar Cars Limited where he took responsibility for the employment and marketing/licensing aspects of the business as well as negotiating international dealer agreements and advising on a number of EU funded technology programmes. In addition, Stephen dealt with the complete legal range of legal issues in all parts and at all levels of this business. Subsequently, Stephen joined the legal department of Rover Group Limited where he progressively took responsibility for the legal aspects of all international financing agreements, overseas distribution agreements and joint ventures. This included UK stock and equipment financing arrangements. Stephen also advised in the due diligence process which saw BMW
acquire the company from British Aerospace.

Stephen’s career continued at Williams Grand Prix Engineering Limited where he developed an expertise in driver contracts, sponsorship negotiations and contracts and engine supply agreements with international motor manufacturers, in particular Renault and BMW. Stephen had significant input as the team’s adviser in the drafting of major commercial agreements relating to the basis of participation of all competitors in
Formula 1 and oversaw conduct of the foreign legal proceedings that arose from the death of Ayrton Senna.

Five years after joining Williams, Stephen moved to the Birmingham office of Eversheds where he was part of the major commercial projects team. In this role, as well as dealing with general commercial agreements, Stephen worked extensively on agreements relating to the re-letting of franchise agreements for the operation of rail franchises, acting of behalf of the Strategic Rail Authority. Stephen has worked on the establishment of overseas joint venture manufacturing projects and a range of transport infrastructure projects operating under the PFI and PPP regime. Some of these projects were relatively localised but others were major high value rail network projects giving Stephen experience and a valuable insight into the approach adopted by clients on the purchase of major projects and the expectations of clients with regard to consortium structures, commitment and security.

Throughout his career Stephen has travelled extensively in connection with his work, having travelled to most parts of Western Europe, Australia, Indonesia, Egypt and the US, and he is experienced in dealing and coordinating with lawyers form other jurisdictions. Stephen’s in-house experience has provided considerable insight into the workings of large and medium sized businesses and he understands the pressures and needs of corporate clients from this perspective. Stephen has for most of his career worked with the highest levels of management within companies, and is able to advise at both the higher corporate level as well as the senior to operational level where commercial agreements fall to be implemented.
